What an adventure it as been so far.
When we arrived our temp housing was located right next to the famous Red Light District, let's just walking the dog was very interesting and Abigail is a very observant little girl. Abigail was sick for the first two weeks, which gave us a crash course in the Dutch health care system. Basically, rest and lots of water. If you come to visit we recommend to bring all the meds you think you may need. She is doing much better now and it's our turn to be under the weather. From what we hear, we all will be sick for the first few months on and off. New little bugs to deal with.
We were able to find a 3 bedroom house/apartment. It is centrally located in an area called the Old South. The tram stop is right around the corner from the house, which is handy when you only have one car. There is a large park (Vondell Park) two blocks from our house where there are restaurants, small lakes, walking paths, and bike paths. Lots of people and lots of fun. Abigail loves the playground. The museums (Van Gogh and others), shopping, parks are a five mintues walk from the house. The Red Light District and the Central train station are 15 mintures by tram.
The house is the first two floors of a building and it has a large garden off the back that Lucas is loving. There is a living room, dining room, kitchen and toilet on the second floor (which they call the first floor) with a patio off the back that has stairs down to the garden. The first floor (which they call the ground floor) has three bedrooms with doors that open to the garden, a bathroom, and a toilet. It's a very typical Dutch house - narrow, long and lots of step steps.
We have temp furniture because we are still waiting on our boat to arrive. Like everything in this country, we will have to wait two to four weeks. If it isn't here in two more weeks, I am sure we will hear the same thing, two to four more week. Like all moves it is stressful but we are getting through it.
Abigail loves to ride on the bike. She has her own seat on the back and she tells dad to go faster all the time. She misses her friends from daycare but we are trying to get her into a daycare here. It isn't easy because there are not many daycares and the need is quite high. Dad and Abigail are adjusting to our new roles together. We are finally falling into a routine. As long as she gets her play, art, and book time. She is happy to go shopping, explore the city and fill out paperwork. We have meet a few other international families and Abigail has been invited to her first play date. On Friday, we registered her at the International School of Amsterdam. Abigail was able to play in one of the rooms with the other kids, she really misses her friends. Her new favorite thing to do is ride the trains. We think she likes watching people and what better people watching than on the trains.
Amy is working lots. It is year end and her boss left on 'holiday' for 2 weeks, so she was left putting together end of the year numbers and next year budgets for a division that she has been working at for one weeks. She is not sure if anything she is doing is correct, but it is working for now.
Here is our new home address. Once we have cable, phone and internet (yes, another 2-3 week waiting period) we will send out our new phone numbers.
